In February, we’ll be back in Namibia. We’ll stay for 17 day’s and already it seems too short for such a great country. We would like to stay many days each place to fully soak in the warmth and atmosphere, but also wish to visit both friend, places I miss and places yet to see. We end up covering large parts of the country, except the far north. This time we decided on a 4×4 car, as we’ll pass through Damaraland, and the roads there may be rocky. I’ve also received a supertele-lens for my birthday and want to get as high up as possible for a good camera angle.
Here are the route we will cover:
Northern part of the route, from Windhoek to Swakopmund: We will first travel to Etosha, where we will stay 2 nights in Okaukuejo and 2 nights in Dolomite camp. Then we’ll continue further southwest towards Twyfelfontain Adventure camp, passing Grootberg pass on the way, and maybe also Palmwag, if time permits and no tyres blows in the way (I think I’ll bring a tyre repair set with a compressor, as I’ve just learnt how to use it). After Twyfelfontain, where we’ll visit the 6000 years old rock engravings, we’ll pass the mining city Uis and slowly set course towards the ocean city of Swakopmund (if we do not get delayed by desert elephants in the Ugab or Huab rivers on the way). In Swakopmund, we’ll visit belowed friends, go to restaurants and swim in the Atlantic ocean.Southern part of the route, from Swakopmund to Windhoek: First we’ll pass Walvis Bay and continue to the sanddunes at Sossusvlei, where we’ll stay 2 nights at Sossusvlei Lodge. The gate into the dune area is closed at night, so to get a photo of the dunes at sunrise we’ll have to be at the gate at 6 in the morning. The next day we’ll drive further towards Aus, but has a hard struggle to decide on whether we should drive the extra miles on the beautiful sand road D707, alongside the desert or take time to visit the Duwisib castle, which I still not have seen. Then we’ll stay 3 nights in Klein Aus Vista to rest, watch the with wild horses, Oryxes and sandy hills and to visit Lüderitz and the deserted diamond city of Kolmanskop. We’ll continue southwards passing Rosh Pinah and will be driving along the Orange river towards Aussenkehr, Ai-Ais and Fish River Canyon, where we’ll spend 2 nights at the Canyon Lodge. The last long leg of the trip, towards the Windhoek area, will be on a tarred road. We wish to come as close as possible to the airport on the second last day, if something should happen with the car. If not it will give us a restful day by the pool at Auas safari Lodge in the end.
You’ll learn more about the lodging we have chosen at our next Namibia trip in my blog about lodging.
